Opening 1NT is very descriptive. It shows between 15 and 17 points and a balanced hand. That said, we may need more information from the notrump bidder to place the contract. Most players have the basics of Stayman and transfers down, but there are cases where we want to be aggressive by inviting with fewer than 8 or 9 card points, and cases where you might choose to pass with that many points.
